In the small town of St. Nazianz, WI, there is a compound of buildings that used to be a seminary. The property itself is well-tended and the grounds are mowed regularly.
Several of the buildings, however, have sat mostly empty for a number of years. The sanctuary, St. Ambrose, appears to be used mostly for storage although it appears to be used for private worship as well. That’s a banner for some sort of event draped across the pews. It’s occasionally open to visitors, although none of the other abandoned parts are.
On closer inspection, you can see where water has made its way in and has started the building’s decay.
The seminary building is also mostly abandoned, and I have not seen it open to the public, other than a thrift store that is active at the back of the building.
This is the dormitory building, to the right of the sanctuary.
(Manitowoc, WI 2015) – The Lakeview Centre mall, known as the “Mid-Cities Mall” back in its heyday (if it could ever have been considered to have a heyday) has been abandoned since the closing of the JC Penny — the last surviving store in the mall — back in 2011. By order of the city, it is supposed to be torn down this year. Abatement is already underway, and demolition should start this summer, so this may have been my last chance for photographs.
The 22 acre property sits within an easy stroll to the Lake Michigan shoreline and a beautiful walking/biking trail that links it with nearby Two Rivers. I hope they they end up turning this property into something nice.
More photos from last year here, here, here, and here.
(Manitowoc, WI) Weeds growing in the sidewalk along the pier last June.
(Manitowoc, WI) Not quite abandoned, there are still a few stores hanging in at this mall, which sits across the street from the totally abandoned Mid-Cities Mall. Weeds are starting to take over the parking lot. The trees to the right of the old Prange Way entrance look healthy and happy.
(Manitowoc, WI) This used to be the auto center at the Mid-Cities Mall. Moss covers the areas where the roof has been leaking for years.
(Manitowoc, WI) There are trees growing on the overhang by the entry to one of the former stores.
(Manitowoc, WI) To the left was the Hallmark store, and to the right was Osco Drugs. The green squares on the floor are tiles that fell from the ceiling, covered in moss that grew from the moisture leaking in.
(Manitowoc, WI) This mall, later renamed to Lakeview Centre, has been abandoned for years. Its sister mall next door, the Lakeshore Mall (formerly Edgewater Plaza), still has a few stores but seems to be looking at the same fate. I still think of them as “The Useless Mall,” and the “Totally Useless Mall,” named that way by my older brother back when they were populated.
